What to Do During an Eye Emergency

During an eye emergency, it's crucial to take the right steps to protect your vision and minimize further damage. Here's what you should do:

  1. Avoid Rubbing: Don’t touch or rub your eyes because this can worsen the problem or push a foreign object deeper into the eye.
  2. Rinse Gently: If you have any chemical exposure to the eye, rinse it gently with clean, lukewarm water for at least 15 minutes. Use a clean cup or a gentle stream of water to avoid contamination.
  3. Remove Contacts: If you wear contact lenses, remove them immediately. They can trap foreign substances or exacerbate the injury.
  4. Don't Attempt to Remove Objects: If a foreign object is lodged in your eye, don't attempt to remove it yourself. Instead, try to keep the eye as still as possible.
  5. Cover the Eye: If you've experienced trauma or injury to one eye, cover it with a clean, sterile dressing or a clean cloth to protect it.
  6. Seek Immediate Care: Contact one of our five locations or your nearest emergency room for professional evaluation and treatment. Time is of the essence in eye emergencies, so don't delay seeking help.
